Why Is the Sand Black on Santorini?

Because it is not sand in the ordinary sense. It is eroded volcanic rock — basalt and lava ground down by the sea over thousands of years — rather than the quartz and shell that make up a typical Mediterranean beach.

Every Santorini black sand beach is a direct consequence of the eruption that destroyed the island around 1600 BC. The volcano emptied its magma chamber, the roof collapsed into the sea and left the caldera, and the eastern and southern coasts were buried in lava and ash. Those deposits are what the waves have been working on ever since.

Colour varies more than people expect. Some stretches are genuinely near-black, others are dark grey, and a few are closer to charcoal-brown with red flecks where the iron content is higher. Grain size varies too, from fine sand at Perivolos to coarse pebbles at parts of Kamari.

Why does black sand get so hot?

Dark surfaces absorb far more solar radiation than pale ones. On a Santorini black sand beach in July or August the surface can become genuinely painful underfoot by late morning — hot enough that walking barefoot from a sunbed to the water is a mistake people make exactly once.

This is the single most practical thing to know before you go. Bring flip flops or beach shoes and keep them on until you are at the waterline, where the wet sand is cool.

Which Santorini Black Sand Beaches Are There?

Six main ones, plus several smaller stretches in the north. They are strung along the east and south coasts, on the opposite side of the island from the caldera cliffs and the villages most visitors stay in.

Perissa

The best known Santorini black sand beach and the longest. It runs for kilometres along the southeast coast beneath Mesa Vouno, the mountain that separates it from Kamari, with the ruins of Ancient Thera on the summit above.

Perissa is fully organised: sunbeds and umbrellas for hire along most of its length, tavernas and beach bars behind, water sports, and a proper resort village with accommodation and shops. The water shelves gently and it is one of the safer beaches for weaker swimmers. It is also the busiest, particularly in the central section.

Best for: a first visit, families, anyone who wants facilities within a few metres of the sunbed.

Perivolos

The continuation of Perissa southward, and where the beach gets more stylish. Perivolos has the concentration of beach bars and beach clubs, music, cocktails and loungers, and it draws a younger crowd than Perissa proper.

The sand here is finer than at Kamari and the beach is wide. Because it runs into Perissa without a break, you can walk from one to the other and the distinction is more about atmosphere than geography.

Best for: beach clubs, sunset drinks, couples and groups in their twenties and thirties.

Agios Georgios

The quieter southern end of the same continuous stretch, past Perivolos. Fewer bars, more space, and the easiest place on this coast to find room in August. The sand and water are identical to Perivolos — you are simply further from the noise.

Best for: the same beach without the crowd.

Kamari

On the other side of Mesa Vouno from Perissa, facing east. Kamari is the most developed beach resort on Santorini, with a long paved promenade behind the beach, restaurants, hotels and shops.

The important difference is the surface: Kamari is coarser, closer to dark pebbles and shingle than to fine sand in many sections. That makes it less comfortable to lie on directly and considerably kinder to walk on when the sun is high. Beach shoes help getting into the water.

It is also the closest black beach to the airport, which makes it a common base for a first or last night.

Best for: promenade dining, families who want infrastructure, travellers with an early flight.

Vlychada

The most dramatic Santorini black sand beach and the one photographers go to. The cliffs behind it are compressed volcanic ash that wind and rain have carved into smooth, pale, almost sculptural shapes — a landscape that looks more like the American southwest than the Aegean.

Vlychada is far less organised than Perissa or Kamari. There are some facilities near the marina at the western end and then very little. The eastern end is traditionally tolerant of naturism, which is worth knowing before you walk that way with children.

Best for: photography, quiet, and anyone who finds organised beaches tiring.

Monolithos

North of Kamari on the east coast, and the most family-oriented beach on the island. The water is shallow a long way out, there is a playground behind the sand, and the crowd is overwhelmingly local families rather than visitors.

It sits close to the airport, so aircraft pass overhead, which some people find charming and others do not.

Best for: young children and anyone who wants shallow, calm water.

The northern beaches: Baxedes and Exo Gialos

North of Oia, largely undeveloped, dark sand and pebbles, with very few facilities. They are exposed to the north wind, which makes them unreliable in the meltemi season but wonderfully empty when it drops.

Best for: escaping people entirely.

What About the Red Beach and the White Beach?

They are the other two volcanic beaches and they are not black. The Red Beach sits below Akrotiri in the south, enclosed by iron-rich cliffs that have oxidised to deep rust, and it is the most photographed piece of coastline on the island after Oia. Access is by a short path to a viewing point; the descent onto the sand itself is subject to rockfall and is periodically closed, so check before committing.

The White Beach is nearby, backed by pale pumice cliffs, and is reachable only by boat from the Red Beach. Both are worth seeing and neither is a swimming destination in the way a Santorini black sand beach is — they are short, rocky and busy.

Is the Water Good for Swimming?

Yes, and better than the caldera side. The east and south coasts have proper beaches with gradual entry, whereas the caldera is a cliff dropping into several hundred metres of water with almost nowhere to swim from.

The water at a Santorini black sand beach is clear and, because the dark seabed absorbs heat, often a degree or two warmer than you would expect. Perissa, Perivolos and Monolithos all shelve gently. Kamari drops away a little more sharply and the pebbles make entry awkward without shoes. Vlychada can have stronger currents and fewer people around to notice if you get into difficulty.

Are there jellyfish or sea urchins?

Jellyfish appear occasionally and unpredictably, as anywhere in the Aegean. Sea urchins cling to rocks rather than sand, so they are a consideration at the rocky margins of Kamari and Vlychada rather than in the middle of a sandy stretch. Beach shoes solve both concerns.

What Should You Take to a Black Sand Beach?

Footwear, above everything. Covered above and worth repeating: the sand gets hot enough to hurt. Flip flops or beach shoes are not optional in July and August.

A sunbed or a thick towel. Black sand radiates heat upward. Lying directly on it in the middle of the day is uncomfortable in a way pale sand is not, which is why the organised beaches do such good business in loungers.

More water than you think. The combination of heat radiating from below and the meltemi wind hiding it is genuinely dehydrating.

Sun protection reapplied often. Reflected heat plus wind is why people burn badly here without noticing.

Cash. Sunbed hire and beach service are frequently cash-only.

A cover-up for the walk to the water, and a bag you do not mind getting fine dark grit into, because you will.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

June and September are ideal. The sea is warm, the sand is bearable, and the beaches are busy without being full.

July and August have the warmest water and the worst conditions underfoot. Go early or after four in the afternoon; the middle of the day on a Santorini black sand beach in August is genuinely unpleasant.

May and October are quiet and pleasant on land, with a sea that is cold in May and still warm in October. October is the better of the two for swimming.

Winter is for walking, not swimming, and Vlychada in winter light is one of the more striking things on the island.

The wind matters more than the temperature. The meltemi blows hardest in July and August and the east and south coasts are exposed to it. On a windy day Kamari and Perissa get choppy, and the northern beaches become unusable. Our month by month guide covers the pattern.

How Do You Get to the Black Sand Beaches?

They are on the opposite side of the island from Fira, Imerovigli and Oia, which is where most visitors stay. Perissa and Kamari are roughly twenty to thirty minutes from Fira by road; Vlychada and Monolithos are similar.

Public bus serves Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari from the Fira terminal. It works, it is cheap, and in August you may not board the first bus that arrives. It does not usefully serve Vlychada.

Hire car or quad gives you freedom, with parking that is manageable at the beaches themselves and difficult everywhere else on the island.
