What Is Santorini Horse Riding Actually Like?

A guided ride at walking pace along the black volcanic sand of the island’s southern coast, with the sea on one side and the cliffs behind. Rides are led rather than free-roaming, so you are never expected to control the horse alone, and the pace is set by the group.

What surprises most people is the ground. Santorini horse riding does not take place on grass or on a bridle path — it happens on ground sand that is dark grey to black, formed from eroded lava, which absorbs heat and photographs unlike any other beach in Europe. The horses are used to it and sure-footed on it.

The other surprise is the quiet. The southern beaches are long and, outside the organised sections, largely empty. Once you are a few hundred metres from the access road there is very little other than the sound of the horses and the water.

Do You Need Riding Experience?

No. The majority of people who book Santorini horse riding with us have never been on a horse, and the format is built for that. Every ride is led, the pace is a walk, and a guide stays with the group throughout.

Before you set off there is a short briefing: how to mount, how to hold the reins, how to sit, how to stop. It takes a few minutes and it is enough for a walking ride. Horses used for this work are chosen for temperament rather than spirit — they do this route several times a day and are entirely unbothered by nervous first-timers.

What if you are an experienced rider?

Say so when you book. Where conditions and the group allow, a faster pace can sometimes be arranged, and being matched to a more responsive horse makes a real difference to the experience. It is worth mentioning your level rather than assuming it will be obvious on the day.

What if you are frightened of horses?

That is more common than people admit and it is manageable. Tell the guide at the start rather than halfway along. Time spent with the horse on the ground before mounting solves most of it, and nobody will push you onto an animal you are not ready for.

Where Does the Ride Go?

Along the black sand beaches of the south and southeast coast, the stretch that runs below the cliffs toward Vlychada and the Perissa and Perivolos shoreline.

This coast is the direct product of the eruption that formed the caldera around 1600 BC. The sand is ground volcanic rock, the cliffs behind are compressed ash and lava in visible layers, and at Vlychada the wind and water have carved the cliff face into shapes that look almost sculpted. It is the most geologically dramatic coastline on the island and the least visited.

Santorini horse riding here means moving through that landscape at a pace that lets you actually look at it, which is not true of a vehicle. The route is flat throughout, so no climbing is involved and the ride is physically undemanding.

Can you ride into the sea?

Horses will happily walk in shallow water and it is one of the better photographs of the ride. Whether it happens depends on the sea state, the tide and the group, and the guide decides on the day. Do not count on swimming with the horse — that is a different activity and is not what this ride is.

How Long Is the Santorini Horse Riding Tour?

The standard ride is one hour, which is the right length for a first-time rider and long enough to cover a genuine stretch of coast. Longer rides can be arranged for experienced riders or for anyone who specifically wants more time in the saddle.

Allow additional time either side for the briefing, meeting your horse, and photographs at the end. Door to door, a one hour Santorini horse riding session with hotel pickup and return usually occupies around two and a half hours of your day.

When Is the Best Time of Day to Ride?

Early morning or late afternoon, and in summer this is not a preference but a requirement.

Morning rides are cooler for both you and the horses, the beach is empty, and the light comes from behind you along the coast. This is the option we recommend for July and August.

Late afternoon rides get you the low golden light that makes black sand photograph well, and in the right season they finish close to sunset. Popular with couples and with photographers.

Midday in high summer is avoided. The black sand absorbs heat aggressively and it is unpleasant for the animals as well as the riders. Any operator willing to send you out at two in the afternoon in August is telling you something about how they treat their horses.

What Should You Wear for Santorini Horse Riding?

Long trousers. The single most important item and the one people get wrong. Shorts against a saddle for an hour will chafe, and the stirrup leathers rub. Jeans, leggings or any long trouser works.

Closed shoes with a small heel if possible. Trainers are fine. Flip flops and sandals are not — they slip through the stirrup and offer no protection if a hoof lands on your foot.

Sun protection. There is no shade on a beach. Sunscreen before you arrive rather than at the stables, a hat that will stay on, and sunglasses.

A light layer for morning rides outside high summer, when the wind off the sea is cooler than the temperature suggests.

Leave loose bags behind. Anything swinging is a distraction for the horse. A small crossbody bag or a zipped pocket is enough for a phone.

Are helmets provided?

Riding helmets are standard practice for this kind of activity and any responsible operation will offer one. Ask when booking your Santorini horse riding session and wear it — the ground is compacted sand and a fall is unlikely, but there is no reason to take the risk.

Is There an Age or Weight Limit?

Yes, and this matters more here than in most riding destinations.

Age. Most operations have a minimum age, typically in the region of six to eight for a led ride, with younger children sometimes offered a short led walk instead. Confirm the exact minimum when you book so nobody is disappointed on the day.

Weight. There is a limit, and it exists for the horse’s welfare rather than for yours. Limits vary by operation and by the individual animal, and a responsible provider will tell you their figure plainly rather than avoiding the question. If you are near a limit, ask before travelling rather than at the stables.

This is a subject Santorini has had to confront publicly. The same principle applies to Santorini horse riding: an animal carrying too much is being harmed, and no photograph is worth that.

How Are the Horses Treated?

Ask this before you book anything involving animals on this island, and be prepared to walk away if the answer is vague.

Santorini has a difficult recent history with working animals, largely around the donkeys and mules that carry visitors up the 580 steps from the old port. Campaigns, media coverage and eventual regulation followed. The reputation attached itself to the whole island, including operations that have always worked properly.

What to look for in a Santorini horse riding provider:

Shade and water at the base. Horses standing in full sun between rides with no trough is the clearest red flag there is.

Condition. Ribs should not be prominent. Coats should look cared for. Tack should fit and not be causing rubs.

Rest between rides. A horse doing back-to-back hours through the middle of an August day is being overworked.

A stated weight limit, applied rather than mentioned.

No midday rides in high summer. Covered above, and it is the easiest test to apply from a booking page.

Is Santorini Horse Riding Safe?

For a led walking ride on flat sand, yes, and the risk profile is low. Every ride is accompanied, the pace is controlled, the ground is forgiving, and the horses do this route daily.

The realistic hazards are sunburn, dehydration and getting on or off the horse awkwardly — not the ride itself. Listen to the mounting instructions, keep your heels down, and tell the guide immediately if anything feels wrong with your saddle or stirrups.

Riding is not recommended during pregnancy, and anyone with a back, neck or joint condition should take medical advice first. If you have a condition the guide should know about, tell them privately at the start.

What Season Is Best for Santorini Horse Riding?

April, May, September and October. The best months without qualification. Comfortable temperatures for riders and horses, empty beaches, and light that suits photography at both ends of the day.

June. Warm and still manageable. Book a morning ride.

July and August. Hot. Riding is restricted to early morning and late afternoon for welfare reasons, and those slots fill. Book well ahead.

November to March. Quiet and often beautiful, with the caveat that rides are weather-dependent. Wind on an exposed beach is the limiting factor rather than temperature, and a ride may be moved or cancelled at short notice. You are not charged when that happens.

Can You Combine Horse Riding With Other Tours?

Yes, and it is the most common way people book it. An hour of Santorini horse riding is a natural addition to a day rather than a day in itself.

With the south of the island. The beaches sit close to Akrotiri, the Red Beach and the southern wine country, so a morning ride pairs naturally with our south part tour.

Why Ride on Black Sand Rather Than Anywhere Else?

Because there is almost nowhere else you can. Black volcanic beaches exist in Iceland, Hawaii, the Canaries and a handful of other volcanic places, and very few of them offer guided riding along them.

The sand on Santorini’s southern coast is eroded lava, dark grey to near-black, and it behaves differently underfoot from ordinary beach sand. It is denser and packs harder near the waterline, which is exactly why it makes good going for horses. Further up the beach it loosens and heats.

Visually it is the reason people book. A horse against black sand, white surf and a rust-coloured cliff is a photograph that does not exist on a Mediterranean beach anywhere else. Santorini horse riding is, for a lot of guests, as much about that image as about the ride.

The geology behind it is the same event that made everything else on this island: the eruption around 1600 BC that collapsed the volcano into the sea and left the caldera. The cliffs above the riding beaches are its ash and lava layers in cross-section, and the Red Beach a short distance west is the same rock with a higher iron content, oxidised to rust.

Photographing a Santorini Horse Riding Ride

Late afternoon beats morning for photography, because the low sun rakes along the beach and separates the horse from the sand. Morning light is flatter but the beach is emptier.

Shoot from the ground as well as the saddle. The best images are usually taken by someone standing at the waterline while the group rides past, so if two of you are travelling, consider one riding and one photographing on part of the route.

Ask the guide. They know where the cliff backdrop works and will usually stop for photographs at the good spots without being asked twice.

Protect the camera. Fine volcanic dust and salt spray are both present. A phone in a pocket is fine; a lens change on the beach is not.

How Does Riding Compare With the Island’s Other Activities?

Santorini horse riding occupies a specific niche: an hour, low effort, high visual payoff, in a part of the island most visitors never reach.

Against a boat trip. Catamaran and volcano cruises take most of a day and are the other big Santorini activity. Riding is the short option that leaves the rest of the day free.

Against a sightseeing tour. A six hour private tour covers far more ground and teaches you the island. Riding does one thing very well.

Against the donkeys at the old port. These are not the same thing and should not be confused. The port animals carry visitors up 580 steps of steep cliff path in heat; a guided beach ride is level ground at walking pace with rest between sessions. If the donkey issue has put you off animal activities on this island entirely, that is an understandable reaction — but the two activities are structurally different, and welfare is a question to ask of the specific operation rather than of the species.
