What Makes Santorini’s Beaches Different?

They are made of ground volcanic rock rather than quartz or shell. Every one of the best beaches in Santorini exists because of the eruption around 1600 BC, which buried the eastern and southern coasts in lava and ash that the sea has been grinding down ever since.

Three consequences follow, and they matter more than the colour.

The sand gets extremely hot. Dark surfaces absorb far more solar radiation than pale ones. By late morning in July and August the surface can be painful underfoot. Beach shoes are not optional.

The water often feels warmer. A dark seabed holds heat, so the sea can read a degree or two above what you would expect for the season.

The grain varies enormously. Perivolos is fine sand; large parts of Kamari are coarse pebbles. That single difference decides whether you lie down comfortably or hire a sunbed.

They are the island’s two other volcanic beaches and neither is a swimming destination in the way the black sand coast is.

The Red Beach sits below Akrotiri in the south, in a cove enclosed by iron-rich cliffs oxidised to deep rust. It is the most photographed coastline on Santorini after Oia and it is small, rocky and crowded. Access is a short path to a viewing point; the descent onto the sand is subject to rockfall and is periodically closed, so check before committing to it.

How Hot Does the Sand Actually Get?

Hot enough to hurt. This is the single most practical thing to know before visiting any of the best beaches in Santorini, and it is the mistake almost every first-time visitor makes exactly once.

By late morning between June and September the surface of black sand is painful on bare feet. The wet strip at the waterline stays cool, but the twenty metres between your sunbed and the sea does not. Flip flops or beach shoes solve it entirely.

The same physics is why a thick towel is not enough to lie on comfortably in the middle of the day, and why the organised beaches do such good business in loungers.

Which Beaches Are Organised?

Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari and Monolithos all have sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, tavernas and beach bars directly behind, showers and, in season, water sports. Vlychada is partly organised near the marina at its western end and then very little. Baxedes and Exo Gialos have almost nothing.

Does the Wind Affect Them?

Considerably, and it is the variable most guides leave out. The meltemi blows from the north through July and August, and the east and south coasts are exposed to it.

On a windy day Kamari and Perissa get choppy, umbrellas become a hazard and the sand moves. The northern beaches at Baxedes and Exo Gialos become effectively unusable. Vlychada is more sheltered than most.

Are They Safe for Swimming?

When Are the Beaches at Their Best?

June and September are ideal: warm sea, bearable sand, and busy without being full.

July and August have the warmest water and the worst conditions underfoot. Go early or after four in the afternoon.

May and October are quiet and pleasant on land. The sea is cold in May and still warm in October, so October is the better of the two for swimming.

Winter is for walking rather than swimming, and Vlychada in winter light is one of the more striking things on the island.

Every list of the best beaches in Santorini ranks them. That is the wrong question, because these beaches are not better or worse than each other — they are different, and the one that suits you depends entirely on what you need from a beach day.

Which beach is best with small children?

Monolithos. It is the only shallow, calm, gently shelving beach on the island, it has a playground and a handful of tavernas, and it is almost never mentioned in guides because it sits beside the airport rather than in a resort. Kamari is the next best because the promenade and services make a long day easy.

Which beach is best for a full serviced day?

Kamari. Sunbeds, showers, tavernas, a paved promenade and a real village behind it. Perissa is the same proposition with sand instead of pebble and slightly lower prices.

Which beach is best for atmosphere and music?

Perivolos. The island’s beach-club strip runs from the southern end of Perissa and keeps going into the evening. It is the nearest thing Santorini has to Mykonos.

Which beach is best for photographs?

Vlychada, without much competition. Wind and water have carved the pale pumice cliffs behind it into shapes that look deliberately sculpted, and late afternoon light makes them extraordinary. It is also the quietest of the best beaches in Santorini relative to how good it is.

Perissa and Perivolos, because they shelve gradually and the south coast is sheltered when the meltemi blows. Kamari’s pebble drops away faster.

What Nobody Tells You About Santorini’s Beaches

The sand is genuinely painful. Black volcanic sand and pebble absorb heat all morning and by midday they will burn bare feet. This is the single most common complaint we hear and it is entirely avoidable with cheap water shoes.

There is almost no natural shade. No pine trees, no cliffs at the right angle, nothing. If you have not paid for an umbrella you are in full sun for the entire day.

Sunbeds are charged per pair. Rates vary widely between beaches and along the same beach, and the front row costs more than the third. In several places the charge is waived if you eat at the attached taverna.

The caldera has no beaches. The famous side of the island is a three hundred metre cliff into deep water. Every one of the best beaches in Santorini is on the opposite coast, which is why a caldera hotel and a beach holiday are not the same trip.

The water is colder than the air suggests. The sea lags roughly two months behind, so September and October swim better than June.

Red Beach access changes. It has been restricted repeatedly because of rockfall and the situation is not stable year to year. Treat the viewpoint as the attraction and check the current position before planning to swim there.

The buses do not reach most of them. Kamari and Perissa are well served. Vlychada, Monolithos, Koloumbos, Baxedes and the Akrotiri bays effectively are not, which is why a car, a scooter or a tour is what actually unlocks the island’s coast.

How to Reach the Best Beaches in Santorini

Kamari and Perissa have frequent buses from Fira and are the default for anyone without transport. Everything else needs a plan.

Vlychada is fifteen minutes from Fira by road with a small car park that fills. Monolithos is beside the airport and easy to combine with a departure day. Koloumbos requires a dirt track and clearance. White Beach is boat access only from Akrotiri. Baxedes is a short drive down from Oia.
