Inside the Caldera: The Reliable Trips
Nea Kameni, the volcano
The black cone in the middle of the caldera, and the island’s youngest land, built by eruptions between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. Boats land at a small jetty and the walk to the crater rim takes around thirty minutes over loose volcanic gravel with no shade whatsoever. There are still steaming fumaroles at the top and the smell of sulphur.
Proper shoes are not optional. Hats and water are essential in summer. It is the most physical of the day trips from Santorini and the one children remember.
Palea Kameni, the hot springs
The older island next door, where a sulphur spring stains a sheltered bay rust-orange. Boats anchor offshore and you swim in from the water, which is a short cold swim into warmer water. The iron permanently stains light-coloured swimwear, so wear something dark you do not care about.
Thirassia
The piece of the original island that separated in the eruption, now home to a few hundred people. The main village of Manolas sits at the top of a stepped climb from the harbour at Korfos, and the tavernas there serve a version of Santorini that has largely disappeared on the main island.

How these are usually combined
Most operators sell them as one trip: volcano, hot springs and Thirassia, half day or full day, sometimes finishing with the caldera at sunset. Some include lunch on Thirassia.
The one variable is wind. All caldera boat trips are cancelled in a strong meltemi, which happens several times each season and most often in July and August. Book them for the middle of your stay, never the last day.
Other Islands: What Is Actually Feasible
Ios
The best island day trip. About an hour by fast ferry, with sailings frequent enough in season to allow a genuine day ashore. Good beaches, a lively hilltop town, and cheap. If you want one island day trip from Santorini, make it this.
Naxos
An hour and a half to two hours. The largest of the Cyclades, green, mountainous, with a long sandy beach beside the main town and villages inland. It is a wonderful island and a poor day trip, because you spend four hours travelling to see a fraction of it. Better as three nights of its own.
Paros
Two to two and a half hours. Naoussa and Parikia are both attractive and both deserve longer. Feasible in a day if the timetable cooperates, rushed if it does not.
Milos
Two to three hours, and the most spectacular coastline in the Cyclades. Connections are thinner than the other islands and a same-day return frequently does not exist. Check both legs before planning anything.
Folegandros
An hour and a half to two hours to one of the most dramatic choras in Greece, perched on a cliff. Sailings are limited, so this works as a day trip only on certain days of the week.
Anafi
Close but poorly served. Schedules seldom permit a same-day return, which is exactly why it stays undeveloped.
Crete
Two to four hours depending on the vessel, and far too large to see in a day. Treat it as a separate destination rather than one of your day trips from Santorini.
Day Trips Without Leaving the Island
Several of the best day trips from Santorini do not involve a boat at all, and they are the ones most visitors skip because they are looking outward rather than inland.
Akrotiri and the south
The Bronze Age town buried by the eruption around 1600 BC, roofed and level, followed by the Red Beach viewpoint, the Akrotiri lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, and Vlychada’s wind-carved cliffs. A full day without repeating anything.
The wine country
Three estates, tastings, and the basket-trained vines that grow with no rainfall at all. Add Pyrgos and Profitis Ilias for the panorama. Of the on-island day trips from Santorini this is the one adults rate highest.
The inland villages
Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio, Vothonas and Exo Gonia in one loop. Flat, shaded, cheap and almost empty at exactly the hours the caldera is unbearable.
Ancient Thera and the east
The ridge city at three hundred and sixty metres, then Kamari or Perissa below for the afternoon. Steep, hot and spectacular.
The caldera rim on foot
Fira to Oia along the cliff, roughly ten kilometres and three to four hours, passing Firostefani, Imerovigli and Skaros. Superb in May or October, punishing in August, and one of the finest walks in the Aegean.

Choosing Between Them
If you have one spare day. The caldera boat: volcano, hot springs and Thirassia. It is the trip that uses the island’s defining feature and nothing else on the list competes.
If you have two. Add the wine country and the inland villages, which is a completely different day and the one guests are most surprised by.
If you have three and want another island. Ios, and only Ios, because the timetable actually supports it.
If you are here a week. Caldera boat, wine country, one island, and one deliberately empty day.
If the wind is up. Every boat-based option is cancelled. Switch to the inland day trips from Santorini, which are unaffected, and move the boat to a later date.
If you are on a cruise call. None of the above. You have about seven usable hours ashore and they should be spent on the island itself.
Practical Notes
Book the boat mid-trip. Wind cancels sailings several times a season and a trip booked for your final day is a trip you may simply lose.
Check both ferry legs. The commonest failure with island day trips from Santorini is a good outbound sailing and no useful return.
Departure points vary. Caldera boats leave from the old port below Fira, from Ammoudi below Oia, or from Vlychada marina depending on the operator. Fast ferries to other islands leave from Athinios, which is a different port on the other side of the island.
Allow for the transfer. Athinios is twenty minutes from Fira and longer from Oia, and there is no ride-hailing on the island. Getting to a seven-thirty sailing means arranging transport the night before.
Sun and water. Almost every option on this page involves hours with no shade. Carry more water than you expect to need.
Shoes. The volcano crater is loose gravel; the Thirassia climb is steps; Ancient Thera is rough ground. Sandals will not do.
Seasickness. The caldera is sheltered and generally calm. Open-water crossings to other islands in a meltemi are not.
Which Boat to Book
The caldera day trips from Santorini are sold on several very different vessels at overlapping prices, and the boat matters more than the itinerary.
Large motor boats. Fifty to a hundred passengers, the cheapest option, and the standard volcano-and-springs trip. Efficient and crowded.
Traditional caiques. Smaller wooden boats, more atmosphere, fewer amenities, often the Thirassia runs.
Catamarans. Twenty to fifty people, a meal aboard, swim stops and usually a sunset finish. More comfortable and considerably more expensive.
Private charters. Your own boat and crew with a negotiable route. Priced for the boat rather than per head, which for a group of eight or more frequently costs less per person than a shared catamaran.
What to check before booking any of them: how many people are aboard, whether food and drink are genuinely included and what they consist of, how long is actually spent moving versus stopped, where it departs from, and what happens if wind cancels it.

Day Trips Versus Island Hopping
A distinction worth making, because visitors frequently plan the first when they want the second.
A day trip means returning to your Santorini bed the same night. That constrains you to Thirassia, the volcano and realistically only Ios among the other islands.
Island hopping means moving your luggage and sleeping somewhere else. That opens up Naxos, Paros, Milos, Folegandros and Mykonos properly, and it is how the Cyclades are designed to be travelled.
The trap. Trying to see Naxos or Milos as day trips from Santorini gives you four hours ashore after five hours of ferries, and you come away thinking the island was unremarkable when in fact you barely saw it.
The rule we give guests. Two islands done properly beat four rushed. If your trip is ten nights, do Santorini and one other island with four or more nights each. If it is a week, stay here and use the caldera for your day trips from Santorini.

September and early October. Warmest sea of the year for the hot springs and swim stops, thinning crowds, and the wind easing. Arguably the best month overall.
Late October and April. Reduced schedules and a cooler sea, but the island trips inland are unaffected and the villages are at their best.

Ios, Naxos and Folegandros in Detail
Ios
An hour by fast ferry and the only island that comfortably supports a same-day return. Chora sits on a hill above the port, walkable in twenty minutes and full of narrow whitewashed lanes. Mylopotas beach is long, sandy and organised, a short bus ride from the port. The island has a young reputation, deservedly, but a daytime visit is simply a good beach day with a pretty village attached.
Of all island-based day trips from Santorini this is the one we would actually recommend, because the travelling is short enough that the day still belongs to you.
Naxos
An hour and a half to two hours, and the largest of the Cyclades. The Portara, a vast marble doorway from an unfinished temple, stands on an islet beside the port and is the first thing you see. Chora behind it is a Venetian castle town with a genuine maze of lanes. Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are long sandy beaches a short ride away.
The problem is scale. Naxos has mountain villages, marble quarries with abandoned kouroi, and a whole interior you cannot touch in a day. Going as one of your day trips from Santorini shows you the port town and one beach, which undersells it badly.
Folegandros
An hour and a half to two hours to one of the most dramatic villages in the Cyclades: a chora perched on a cliff edge two hundred metres above the sea, with a church above it reached by a switchback path. The island is small, quiet and almost undeveloped.
Sailings are limited and vary by day of the week, so it works as a day trip only occasionally. When the timetable allows it, it is the most memorable of the longer day trips from Santorini.
Fitting Day Trips into a Short Stay
Three nights. No day trips from Santorini at all. You have two usable days and the island itself needs both.
Four nights. One trip, and it should be the caldera boat. Volcano, hot springs, Thirassia.
Five nights. The caldera boat plus one inland day covering the wine country or Akrotiri and the south.
Seven nights. The caldera boat, one inland day, one island day to Ios, and at least one day with nothing planned.
Ten nights or more. Add Folegandros if the timetable allows, or better still stop treating other islands as day trips and move your luggage for three nights.
The consistent mistake is stacking day trips from Santorini onto a short stay and then seeing very little of Santorini itself, which is the island you paid to come to.

Take the caldera boat. Add an inland day the bus cannot reach. Add Ios if you have the time and the appetite. Leave the rest of the Cyclades for a trip where you sleep on them.

The caldera boat is the best value of all day trips from Santorini. A shared volcano and hot springs trip is modestly priced per person; adding Thirassia and a sunset raises it. Private charters are priced for the boat, which suits groups of eight or more.
Island ferries are cheap in isolation and expensive in time. A return to Ios costs little; a return to Milos costs the same order of money and most of your day.
Inland day trips from Santorini cost only the transport, since the villages, viewpoints and Profitis Ilias are free and Akrotiri is modestly ticketed. On a per-vehicle basis a group of four does this for less than four ferry tickets.
The hidden cost in every island option is the transfer to Athinios and back, twenty minutes from Fira and longer from Oia, on an island with no ride-hailing. Budget for it or the early sailing becomes a taxi problem at six in the morning.
Where people waste money is booking a long ferry day to an island they will barely see. That is the single most common regret we hear about day trips from Santorini, and it costs a whole day rather than a few euro.
Which Trip Suits Whom
Families with children. The volcano and hot springs boat, without question. It is the day children describe when they get home.
Couples. A catamaran with swim stops finishing at sunset, or Thirassia for somewhere genuinely quiet.
Older travellers. Thirassia by boat without the volcano climb, or the inland day trips from Santorini, which involve almost no walking on rough ground.
Groups. A private charter, priced for the boat rather than per head.
Photographers. The caldera from the water in the last two hours of light, and Thirassia looking back at the rim.
Anyone prone to seasickness. Stay inside the caldera, which is sheltered. Open crossings to other islands in a meltemi are a different proposition entirely.
