Every One of the Santorini Sunset Spots, Ranked Honestly
There are far more Santorini sunset spots than the one everybody photographs, and several of them are better. Here is the full list, in the order we would actually send you.
1. Imerovigli
The highest point on the caldera rim, with the widest and least obstructed view of any of the Santorini sunset spots. The sun drops behind Thirassia with Skaros Rock in the foreground and Oia visible along the cliff to the north. A fraction of the crowd, and the same sun.
2. Skaros Rock
Forty minutes each way from Imerovigli, steep in both directions, ending at the chapel of Theoskepasti on the far side of the promontory. You will share it with a handful of people rather than a thousand. Take a torch for the walk back.
3. From a boat in the caldera
The only angle that conveys the scale of the cliff, and the one that appears in most of the photographs people are proudest of. Catamaran cruises and private charters both finish at sunset. Wind dependent.
4. Firostefani
The rim between Fira and Imerovigli, with the Three Bells church in the foreground. Underrated among the Santorini sunset spots because most visitors walk straight past it toward Fira.
5. Santo Wines and Venetsanos
Two wineries with terraces facing straight across the caldera. Santo above Pyrgos is the famous one and books out; Venetsanos above Athinios port is more dramatic and less crowded. A glass of Assyrtiko and a seat is a more civilised proposition than standing on a wall.
6. Akrotiri village and the Faros lighthouse
The south-western tip, with the Venetian castle ruin above the village and the lighthouse at the very end of the peninsula. Almost nobody uses these Santorini sunset spots and the drive out at that hour is superb.
7. Profitis Ilias
The island’s highest point at around five hundred and sixty metres. You see the sun go down over the whole island rather than just the caldera, with both coasts and every village in view.
8. Pyrgos
The kasteli rooftops catch the last light, and the village is quiet. Not a caldera view, which is exactly why it is different from the other Santorini sunset spots.
9. Ammoudi Bay
Below Oia at the bottom of three hundred steps. You lose the horizon behind the cliff, but the light on the red rock and the fishing boats is remarkable, and you can eat while it happens.
10. The Fira rim walkway
Busy but workable, with cafes and bars the whole length and no need to arrive early.
11. Vlychada
South coast, so the sun sets to your right rather than in front of you, but the carved pale cliffs at that hour are the best light they get all day.
12. Your own terrace
If you booked a caldera-facing room, this is what you paid for. Of all the Santorini sunset spots it is the only one with no walk, no crowd and no queue for a drink.
13. The Oia castle
Last, deliberately. It is the most famous of the Santorini sunset spots and, between June and September, the least pleasant. Two thousand people stand on a fortification built for a few dozen, arriving ninety minutes early to hold a position, and the traffic afterwards blocks the village for an hour.
How to Handle Oia at Sunset if You Insist
Some people want the famous one, and that is fair. If you do, these are the rules that make it bearable.
Arrive by five thirty in summer if you want a position on the castle itself, earlier in August.
Do not go to the castle at all. The terraces along the northern edge of the village, the path toward Ammoudi and any west-facing bar give you the same sun and somewhere to sit.
Book a restaurant with a west view instead of standing. You pay for the view either way; one version has a chair and a drink.
Plan the exit. The lane out of Oia is single file after sunset and the road is gridlocked for forty minutes. Our drivers wait outside the congestion and time the pickup accordingly.
Or go at dawn instead. Oia between six and eight in the morning is empty, softly lit, and photographable without a stranger in frame. Almost nobody does it.
What Time Does the Sun Set on Santorini?
Sunset times move by more than three hours across the year, which changes what a Santorini sunset spot evening actually looks like.
| Month | Approximate sunset | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| January | 17:35 | Earliest sunsets, clearest air of the year |
| February | 18:05 | Cold, sharp light, nobody on the rim |
| March | 18:35 | Clocks change late March, sunset jumps an hour |
| April | 20:05 | Long golden hour, comfortable temperatures |
| May | 20:30 | Excellent light, moderate crowds |
| June | 20:50 | Latest sunsets of the year, dinner runs late |
| July | 20:45 | Peak crowds, haze from the meltemi |
| August | 20:15 | Busiest, and the castle is at its worst |
| September | 19:35 | Warm, softer light, thinning crowds |
| October | 18:55 | Best balance of light, warmth and space |
| November | 17:35 | Clocks change late October, early sunsets return |
| December | 17:25 | Earliest of all, and the island to yourself |
Times are approximate and shift within each month. The practical points: in June the sun sets so late that dinner runs to eleven, and in December it is dark before five, which makes the winter Santorini sunset spots a late-afternoon activity rather than an evening one.
Photographing the Santorini Sunset
Do not shoot into the sun. The most common error. Pointing the camera straight at the setting sun flattens the village into silhouette and blows the sky. Turn ninety degrees and photograph what the sun is lighting instead — the white walls at that hour go gold.
The best frames come twenty minutes after the sun has gone. Blue hour on this island is exceptional, the crowds have started leaving, and the village lights come on against a deep sky.
Foreground matters more than the sun. A dome, a bell tower, a boat or Skaros gives the picture a subject. The sun alone is the same everywhere on earth.
Bring something to steady the camera for the blue-hour frames, and expect wind at every one of the exposed Santorini sunset spots.
Our guide to photography tours covers the specific positions and hours in more detail.
Santorini Sunset Spots: Common Questions
Where is the best sunset in Santorini?
Imerovigli, for the highest and widest view on the caldera rim, with a fraction of the crowd at Oia.
Is the Oia sunset worth it?
The view is. The experience, between June and September, usually is not. Go to Oia at dawn and watch the sunset from Imerovigli.
How early should you arrive?
Ninety minutes for the Oia castle in summer. Twenty minutes for almost every other spot on this list.
Are the sunset spots free?
All the viewpoints are. Winery terraces and restaurants charge for what you consume, not for the view.
Can you see the sunset from the beaches?
Not into the horizon — the beaches face east and south. Vlychada gets the best of the late light on its cliffs.
Where do you watch the sunrise instead?
Kamari, Perissa, Ancient Thera or Profitis Ilias. Almost nobody does, which is the appeal.
Does the sunset get cancelled by wind?
Not on land. Boat sunsets are cancelled by a strong meltemi several times each season.
Which month has the best sunset light?
October, then May. Clear air, warm temperatures and manageable crowds at every one of the Santorini sunset spots.
Can you get a taxi after the Oia sunset?
Realistically no. It is the single worst window on the island for finding a vehicle. Pre-book.
Is there a sunset tour?
Yes — our private sunset tour covers several viewpoints by road and times the exit around the traffic.

Tell us your dates and we will pick the right viewpoint for the evening. Write to us — we usually reply the same day.
Which of the Santorini Sunset Spots Suits Your Evening?
If it is your only evening on the island, take Imerovigli. Of all the Santorini sunset spots it gives the most complete view for the least effort, and you can walk to dinner afterwards.
If you are here for a week, use different Santorini sunset spots on different nights. The island looks genuinely unalike from the rim, from a winery terrace, from the water and from the inland hills, and doing all four is a better use of four evenings than repeating the famous one.
If you are proposing, Skaros Rock or a private boat. Both are among the few Santorini sunset spots where you will not be photographed by strangers.
If you have small children, choose Santorini sunset spots with a seat and a kitchen: a winery terrace, a Firostefani cafe or a west-facing restaurant. Steps and cliff edges after dark are a poor combination.
If you have mobility limits, the accessible Santorini sunset spots are the winery terraces, the Fira walkway and the Akrotiri lighthouse road, all of which a vehicle can reach.
If you are photographing seriously, pick Santorini sunset spots with a foreground: Skaros from Imerovigli, the Three Bells at Firostefani, or the domes from the northern edge of Oia.
If you are off a cruise ship, you will almost certainly be back on board before sunset, which is why the shore excursion is built around the middle of the day instead.
If it is winter, the sun is down before five and the Santorini sunset spots empty entirely. This is the season when the Oia castle is genuinely worth using.
More Key Points on the Santorini Sunset Spots
- Arrive twenty minutes early at most Santorini sunset spots, ninety only for Oia.
- The best light at the Santorini sunset spots comes after the sun has gone, not before.
- Wind is stronger at the exposed Santorini sunset spots than the village streets suggest.
- Carry a torch if you walk to the remote Santorini sunset spots such as Skaros.
- Restaurant tables at the west-facing Santorini sunset spots book weeks ahead in summer.
- Winery terraces are the only Santorini sunset spots where you reliably get a chair.
- Boat-based Santorini sunset spots are cancelled by a strong meltemi several times each season.
- Inland Santorini sunset spots such as Pyrgos give warm light on stone rather than sea.
- The quietest Santorini sunset spots are all within twenty minutes of the busiest one.
- Photographers should treat the Santorini sunset spots as a light source, not a subject.
- Dawn at Oia beats every one of the Santorini sunset spots for photographs without crowds.
- Pre-booked transport turns the Santorini sunset spots from a logistical problem into an evening.
Ask us which of the Santorini sunset spots fits your dates, your party and the wind, and we will tell you straight.
Planning Your Evening Around the Santorini Sunset Spots
The mistake almost everyone makes is treating the Santorini sunset spots as a single destination rather than a choice. There are thirteen of them on this page and only one is famous, which is why the famous one is unpleasant for a quarter of the year and the others are not.
Decide three things before the evening starts. First, whether you want to stand or sit, because that alone rules out or rules in half the Santorini sunset spots. Second, whether you want the caldera or the island, since the inland Santorini sunset spots give a completely different picture. Third, how you are getting home, because the Santorini sunset spots around Oia become a taxi dead zone the moment the sun goes down.
Answer those and the choice makes itself. Couples who want the postcard take Imerovigli. Couples who want privacy take Skaros or a boat. Families take a winery terrace. Photographers take a foreground and stay for blue hour. Anyone with one evening and no plan should take the rim rather than the castle.
We run the roads between all of these Santorini sunset spots every evening of the season, and the single most useful thing we can tell you is that the difference between a good sunset here and a frustrating one is almost never the sky. It is where you stood and how you got away afterwards.
Tell us the date and the party, and we will put you at the right one of the Santorini sunset spots with the vehicle waiting outside the traffic.
