Red Beach Santorini is the island’s most photographed stretch of coast and the one that most often disappoints people who arrive without knowing what they are walking into. It is a small bay of dark red and black pebble beneath a towering iron-red cliff on the south west coast, ten minutes from Akrotiri. It is genuinely spectacular. It is also reached by a rough path over a headland, it sits under rock that has fallen more than once, and it fills with several hundred people between eleven and four in high season. We drive guests there every week, so this page is the practical version. Our Santorini Tours include it on the south of the island.
The short recommendation: go early, wear proper shoes, read the warning signs rather than walking past them, and consider taking the boat instead of the path.
The Short Answer
It is ten minutes from Akrotiri and about twenty-five from Fira, at the end of a road with a small car park.
The last stretch is on foot, five to ten minutes over a rocky headland on loose stone.
There are rockfall warnings and they are real; the cliff has collapsed in places and access is restricted from time to time.
Go before ten or after five. The middle of the day belongs to the coaches and the boats.
The swimming is excellent, clear and deep, and water shoes make the pebble far more comfortable.

Two rows decide most visits to Red Beach Santorini: the approach path and the rockfall. Everything else is a normal, very beautiful Greek bay.
Getting to Red Beach Santorini
By car. Twenty-five minutes from Fira, ten from Akrotiri, with a small car park at the end of the road. It fills by mid-morning in season.
By bus. The Akrotiri service runs from Fira and stops near the archaeological site, leaving a walk of roughly fifteen minutes to the car park.
By boat. Small boats run from Akrotiri and from Kamari, dropping you directly onto the sand. This avoids the path entirely and is what we recommend for anyone unsteady on rough ground.
By tour. Most south-of-the-island tours stop here, including our south part and Akrotiri tour.
The last stretch on foot. From the car park a path climbs a headland and drops to the bay. Loose stone, no handrail, five to ten minutes, and genuinely awkward in sandals.
What it is not. Accessible. There is no step-free route to Red Beach Santorini and no way to get a buggy down.
The Red Beach Santorini Rockfall Warnings
They are not decorative. The cliff above the bay is soft volcanic rock and sections have collapsed.
Access is periodically restricted by the local authority, sometimes for a season at a time, and signage changes.
What visitors actually do. Most walk past the signs. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and we would still tell you to keep away from the base of the cliff and not to sit directly beneath it.
The safest part of the beach is the water’s edge at the far end from the path.
If the path is closed, take a boat, which lands away from the unstable section.
Check locally on the day. Conditions at Red Beach Santorini change, and your hotel or driver will know the current position better than any website.
What It Is Like When You Get There
The colour. Iron-rich rock, oxidised to rust, against black volcanic sand and turquoise water. It really does look like the photographs.
The size. Small. A few hundred metres of shoreline, which is why it feels crowded so quickly.
The pebble. Coarse and hot underfoot by mid-morning. Water shoes transform the visit.
The water. Clear, deep close in, and excellent for swimming.
Facilities. A canteen and some sunbeds in season, and very little else.
Shade. Almost none once the sun is up.
Boats. Excursion boats anchor off the bay, so keep clear of the edges when swimming.
When to Visit Red Beach Santorini
Before ten in the morning. Empty, cool, and the light on the cliff is at its best.
After five. The coaches have gone and the boats have finished.
Never between eleven and four in July or August, when Red Beach Santorini holds several hundred people on a very small shoreline.
May, June and September are the best months overall.
Winter. Empty and dramatic, with nothing open and the path often wet and slippery.
Windy days. The bay is fairly sheltered from the northerly, which makes it a useful alternative when Kamari and Perissa are unusable. See our weather guide.
White Beach and the Alternatives
White Beach is around the headland, reachable only by boat, with pale cliffs instead of red and a fraction of the people.
Black Beach at Vlychada has extraordinary wind-sculpted white cliffs and a proper stretch of sand.
Kamari and Perissa are the practical swimming beaches, organised and easy. See our beaches guide.
Mesa Pigadia, nearby and quiet, with a couple of tavernas.
Combining them. A small boat from Akrotiri usually calls at Red Beach Santorini, White Beach and Mesa Pigadia in one trip, which is the best way to see the south coast.
Red Beach Santorini: Common Questions
Where is Red Beach?
On the south west coast below Akrotiri, ten minutes from the archaeological site and about twenty-five from Fira.
Why is it red?
The cliff is iron-rich volcanic rock that has oxidised, and the same iron colours the pebble on the shore.
Is Red Beach Santorini closed?
Access is periodically restricted because of rockfall, and signage changes. Check locally on the day rather than relying on older information.
Is it safe?
The bay is fine; the cliff above part of it is not. Stay away from the base of the rock and consider arriving by boat.
How do you get down?
A rough path over a headland from the car park, five to ten minutes on loose stone, or by small boat directly onto the shore.
Is it accessible?
No. There is no step-free route and no way to bring a buggy or wheelchair.
Is there a bus?
The Akrotiri bus from Fira stops near the site, leaving a walk of roughly fifteen minutes to the car park.
Are there sunbeds?
Some in season, along with a canteen. Facilities are otherwise minimal.
Can you swim there?
Yes, and the water is clear and deep. Water shoes help on the coarse pebble.
How long should I stay?
An hour is enough to see it; half a day if you are swimming and the crowds are thin.
What should I bring?
Water, sun protection, water shoes and shoes with grip for the path.

Combining Red Beach Santorini With Akrotiri
Ten minutes apart, and the obvious pairing for a morning.
Site first, beach second. Akrotiri opens early and is roofed, so do it at opening time and reach Red Beach Santorini before the coaches.
Add a winery on the way back for a complete half day in the south.
Or add Vlychada, fifteen minutes east, for the white cliffs and a proper beach afterwards.
Where to eat. Akrotiri village or Mesa Pigadia, both a few minutes away.
Our Akrotiri guide covers the site itself, and our three day itinerary shows where this half day fits.

The Short Version
Drive or bus to the car park below Akrotiri, walk the ten minute path in proper shoes, keep away from the base of the cliff, and go early.
Red Beach Santorini deserves its reputation for the colour and loses it entirely between eleven and four in August. Arriving at half past eight, or stepping off a boat instead of scrambling over the headland, is the difference between the two versions.
Why the Cliff Looks Like That
It is a cinder cone, cut in half by the sea, exposing the layers inside.
The red is iron in the scoria, oxidised over millennia into rust.
The black bands are lava flows between the looser red material.
The rock is soft, which is why it erodes, and why the rockfall signs at Red Beach Santorini exist at all.
The same chemistry colours the water at the hot springs across the island.
